What Is GEO? Getting ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to Recommend Your Brand
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and how is it different from SEO? A guide to content, schema and llms.txt so AI assistants cite your brand.
Your customers no longer just type into Google. They ask ChatGPT “which dental clinic in İzmir is good?” and Gemini “which e-commerce platform suits a small business?”. These assistants produce a single answer and cite a handful of brands as sources. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your brand onto that short list.
What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?
SEO aims for a top spot among the ten blue links on a results page. GEO aims to be quoted, recommended or linked as a source inside the answer an AI model generates. The term spread with the 2023 paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by researchers at Princeton and Georgia Tech, which measured that content with citations, statistics and expert quotes was markedly more visible in generative search answers.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A top ranking position | Being a source in the AI answer |
| Metrics | Impressions, clicks, position | Citations, brand mentions, referral traffic |
| Content | Keywords and search intent | Clear answers, evidence, entity consistency |
| Technical | Crawling, indexing, speed | The same plus structured data and a machine-friendly summary |
How do AI assistants choose their sources?
Models learn in two ways: from their training data and from searching the web live while answering. The second, retrieval, is the real opportunity for businesses. The assistant runs a search, reads a few pages and builds the answer from the clearest, most trustworthy sentences on them. That is why these signals matter:
- Direct answers: paragraphs that answer the question in the first two sentences, then go into detail.
- Evidence: content with numbers, dates, sources, price ranges and concrete examples.
- Entity consistency: your brand name, address, phone and services written the same way on your site, Google Business Profile and social accounts.
- Authority: other sites, directories and news outlets mentioning your brand.
- Crawlability: AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) not blocked in robots.txt.
A practical GEO checklist
1. Turn questions into headings and answer them right away
Use the questions customers actually ask (“how long does a website take to build?”) as H2/H3 headings and give the clear answer in the first sentence below. Long intros bury the sentence an AI would quote.
2. Add schema.org structured data
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article and FAQPage markup tells machines who you are, where you operate and what you sell without making them guess. Every page on this site carries this markup.
3. Publish an llms.txt file
llms.txt, proposed in 2024, gives language models a plain Markdown summary of your site, its key pages and core facts. It isn’t an official standard yet and Google doesn’t use it as a ranking signal, but it costs very little and can help assistants summarize you correctly. See our own llms.txt as an example.
4. Add evidence
Instead of “we build fast websites”, write “mobile PageSpeed above 90, average delivery in 3 weeks”. Numbers and concrete statements build trust with people and models alike.
5. Earn more brand mentions
Industry directories, local news sites, partner reference pages and a well-kept Google Business Profile let an AI conclude that your brand is real and does what it says.
How do you measure GEO results?
There is no Search Console for GEO yet. In practice we track three things: referral traffic in GA4 from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com; whether your brand is mentioned when we regularly ask assistants your industry’s key questions; and how branded searches change over time.
Conclusion
GEO is a solid SEO foundation, clearly written content and consistent brand information working together. At Comply Software, every professional website we build ships with schema.org, llms.txt and a structure open to AI crawlers. Curious how your current site shows up in AI search? Write to us.
Frequently asked questions
Will GEO replace SEO?
No. AI assistants compile their answers largely from crawlable, trustworthy web pages. A site without a technical SEO foundation is invisible in GEO too. GEO is a layer on top of SEO.
Is an llms.txt file required?
It isn’t required, nor is it an official standard. It is easy to create, though, gives language models a plain summary of your site and can help your brand information come across correctly.
How soon does GEO work show results?
With assistants that use retrieval, effects can appear within a few weeks of your pages being crawled. Showing up in a model’s training data can take months, so content and brand mentions should be treated as ongoing work.
