Local SEO with Google Business Profile: Standing Out on Maps

A checklist for setting up and managing your Google Business Profile to rank higher in Google Maps and local search results.

All posts

“Hairdresser near me”, “dental clinic in Karşıyaka”, “print shop nearby”… In local searches, the first thing people see is often not a website but the business list on Google Maps. Ranking high in that list comes down to setting up the free Google Business Profile correctly and managing it regularly.

How does Google rank local results?

Google states openly that local results are based on three main factors:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what the user is looking for. Category, services and description decide this.
  • Distance: how far the business is from the searcher’s location or the place named in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known the business is. Review count and rating, mentions across the web and your site’s organic strength are part of this signal.

You can’t change distance, but relevance and prominence are fully in your hands.

Profile setup checklist

  1. The right primary category. The single most important setting. “Marketing agency” or “advertising agency”? Check what your competitors use and pick the most specific one, then add secondary categories.
  2. Consistent NAP. Your business Name, Address and Phone must be written exactly the same on your website, social accounts and directories.
  3. Service area. If you have no storefront, hide the address and list the districts and cities you serve. Comply Software, an İzmir-based business without a storefront, works this way too.
  4. Opening hours and special days. Enter holiday hours in advance; wrong hours are the fastest route to a bad review.
  5. Services and products. Add each service with a description and, if possible, a price range.
  6. Real photos. Your team, office, products and finished work. Stock images don’t build trust.
  7. Website link. Link from the profile to the relevant service or contact page, and track it separately in GA4 with UTM parameters.

Reviews: the fuel of local SEO

Review count, rating and freshness affect both ranking and the decision to click. For a steady flow of reviews:

  • After every delivery, send the customer a short message with a direct review link (WhatsApp works very well).
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, briefly, personally and professionally.
  • Don’t offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews; that violates Google’s policies.
  • Don’t buy fake reviews; Google detects and removes them and may penalize the profile.

Strengthen the profile and the website together

The prominence signal isn’t independent of your website’s strength. Pages describing the areas you serve, LocalBusiness structured data, NAP details identical to your Maps listing and a fast mobile experience lift your local ranking together. As we explain in our GEO article, AI assistants use this consistent information for local recommendations too.

A 15-minute weekly routine

  1. Reply to new reviews.
  2. Publish an update (post): a new project, an offer, an announcement.
  3. Add 2 or 3 new photos.
  4. Check the Q&A section and any edits Google suggests.
  5. Look at searches, search terms, direction requests and calls in the performance panel.

Conclusion

Google Business Profile is the highest-return free marketing channel for local businesses. When the right category, consistent details, a steady flow of reviews and a strong website come together, visibility on Maps lasts. Frequently asked questions

Can I create a Google Business Profile without a storefront?

Yes. Businesses that serve customers at their location or work remotely can create a profile by hiding the address and defining a service area. Purely online businesses with no in-person contact with customers aren’t eligible.

Can I have a negative review removed?

Only reviews that violate Google’s policies (spam, abuse, off-topic content, conflicts of interest) can be reported and removed. Reviews describing a real but negative experience stay; a calm, solution-focused reply is the best response.

How soon will my profile rank higher?

Category and information fixes usually show an effect within a few weeks. Review and prominence signals build up over time; with regular upkeep, expect a lasting rise within months.
