Google Ads: Performance Max or Search? When Each One Pays Off

The differences between Performance Max and Search campaigns in Google Ads, which one fits which business, and how to run both side by side.

All posts

Almost every business that opens a Google Ads account runs into the same question: should we launch Performance Max (PMax) or a classic Search campaign? The short answer: they do different jobs, and in most accounts they work best together, in the right order.

Search campaigns: capturing intent

A Search campaign shows your text ad above the results when someone types a query into Google. You decide which keywords you appear for, how much you bid and which searches you exclude (negative keywords).

  • Strength: it captures users ready to buy (“emergency locksmith near me”, “corporate website price”).
  • Control: the search terms report is transparent; you can see exactly where the money goes.
  • Weakness: it only meets existing demand; it doesn’t create demand, and volume is capped by what people search for.

Performance Max: all of Google’s inventory in one campaign

PMax appears across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps with a single campaign. You provide images, videos, headlines and audience signals; Google’s AI decides which combination to show, to whom and on which channel.

  • Strength: scale and discovery. It reaches people who aren’t searching for you yet but behave like your customers.
  • Automation: bids, placements and creative combinations are optimized continuously.
  • Weakness: control is more limited, and the algorithm is blind without good conversion data.

Which one suits you?

SituationOur recommendation
New account, no conversion data, limited budgetStart with Search
Service business focused on calls and formsMostly Search; test PMax once data builds up
E-commerce with a product feed and 30+ sales a monthPMax (with Merchant Center) plus a brand Search campaign
Local business aiming for store visitsSearch plus Google Business Profile, then PMax with local goals
Weak image and video assetsPrepare creatives first; PMax underperforms with weak assets

5 rules for running both

  1. Measurement first. Don’t launch PMax before GA4 and Google Ads conversion tags are set up correctly, or the algorithm will optimize for the wrong goal.
  2. Separate brand traffic. Keep searches for your brand name in their own Search campaign and apply brand exclusions in PMax. Otherwise PMax looks as if it “won” customers who were coming anyway.
  3. Respect the learning period. PMax usually takes a few weeks to stabilize. Don’t keep changing budgets and targets in the first days.
  4. Creative variety. Give every asset group images in several aspect ratios, at least one video and more than five headlines.
  5. Read search terms weekly. Review the search terms coming in for both Search and PMax and keep your negative list up to date.

A common mistake: treating PMax as a magic button

PMax is only as good as the signals it gets. A tag that counts a thank-you page view as a “purchase”, or a setup that values every form submission the same, steers the algorithm towards low-quality conversions. Defining conversion values close to real profit and feeding qualified lead data back from your CRM improves PMax performance noticeably.

Conclusion

Search captures intent; PMax brings scale. The right order is solid measurement, a controlled Search structure and growth with PMax once data builds up. Our Google Ads management service runs this setup with weekly optimization; get in touch if you’d like a roadmap for your account.

Frequently asked questions

Will Performance Max replace Search campaigns?

No. PMax also appears on Search inventory, but separate Search campaigns are still valuable for precise keyword control and managing brand traffic. In most accounts the two work best together.

What is the minimum budget for PMax?

There is no fixed minimum, but a daily budget of several times your target cost per conversion is recommended so the algorithm can learn. With a very low budget PMax can’t collect data and the learning period drags on.

Can service businesses use PMax?

Yes, but conversion tracking (calls, forms, WhatsApp) must be set up correctly first and qualified leads must be distinguishable. Otherwise PMax may drift towards low-quality form fills.
